The Chapter Programs of Kappa Epsilon Lambda
Kappa Epsilon Lambda is a steady provider of the four major national programs of our great fraternity: Project Alpha, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College, and Brother’s Keeper. Through local implementations of these four national programs, we strive to guide the constituents of the county in a positive way by helping the youngest to the oldest live with pride and confidence and to be more productive people within their communities.
The Alpha Academy Committee is one of KEL’s mentoring service committees that is offered in southern Prince George’s County, Maryland. Our main focus is to encourage more young men to pursue post-secondary education. Our target audience is male youth of middle and high school ages that include ages 12-19 and grades 7-12. The Alpha Academy Committee promotes positive role models, values, discipline, accountability and best practices for life skills through interactive activities, experienced facilitators & speakers, and discussions about current events.
In addition to inspiring and motivating the youth to pursue higher educational goals and other types of post-secondary educational opportunities; we offer a variety of mentoring sessions on topics such as the proper use of social media and developing time management skills in preparation for college and life; financial literacy and entrepreneurship; cultural awareness and Black History; Science, Technology, Engineering Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) activities etc. One of the main goals from providing the mentoring sessions to our mentees is to expand their analytical, critical and logical skills so that they will be able to engage in intelligent discussions and make good decisions for their lives. The young men will not only be exposed to some of the above topics, but also we will have guest speakers to come in to speak to the mentees periodically.
Finally, the Alpha Academy offers opportunities for the mentees to participate in a voluntary oratorical contest that allows them to sharpen their public speaking skills and the winners win prizes. We also help to coordinate the summer Leadership Development Institute (LDI). The mission of LDI is to equip selected high school students primarily sophomores to seniors with vital and fundamental leadership skills.
